Vaccination Update...

With the recent confusion in regard to the Strangles vaccine I wanted to circle back to y’all in this regard. We have been vaccinating annually for this highly contagious disease since about 15 years ago when we brought in a consignment sales pony who unknowingly infected our barn. In 2019 one of the biggest boarding/show barns in the area dealt with a 90 day isolation period due to this disease and currently there is another local outbreak. The last time our horses were vaccinated for it was with Dr. McDavitt in spring of 2021 so if you were a boarder at that time your horse got the vaccine. When we switched routine services to Janssen Vet Clinic in the fall of 2021 I spoke with Dr. McGill at that time about the possibility of splitting up the spring vaccines. The sheer quantity of these spring shots left a lot of the horses with necks so sore they couldn’t graze for a couple of days. So hence the strangles vaccine didn’t show up on our radar again until now. I should have prefaced this entire scenario with this blog prior to sending out Dr. McGill’s email, it only created unnecessary confusion and worries and I apologize for that. Between our showing schedule and continuously having new horses introduced for either lessons or sales we will always require this vaccine annually as stated in the boarding contract. We thank you for being informed and pro-active horse owners!
